K7 Media’s  communication manager David Ciaramell presented some trends in the international formats sector on the CEE region during a conference at Content Budapest (June, 26-29).

He highlighted that Poland is the biggest importer of formats within CEE, with data showing that 53 formats were adapted locally in that country in 2022. Hungary came in second place with 28, while Romania was next with 17 format adaptations. Estonia and Slovakia drew in fourth place with 16 each.

Ciaramella also listed the most adapted formats in the CEE region last year, with Family Feud, Got Talent and Masked Singer all being reversioned nine times, while Married at First Sight, MasterChef, The Voice, The X Factor and Who Wants to be a Millionaire? all seeing seven adaptations.

Other K7 slides showed that adaptations within CEE accounted for 16% of all format adaptations in 2022, compared with 40% for Western Europe and 13% for the Nordic region. Asia accounted for 9%, followed by Latin America (7%), North America (6%), MENA (5%) and Africa (4%).

In terms of the countries supplying formats that were adapted in other markets between 2020 and 2022, the UK topped the list with a total of 40 adaptations. This was followed by Israel (30), South Korea (24), the US (16), Turkey (14) and Argentina and Japan both on 10.

Breaking down the K7 data further, Ciaramella said comedy was the most popular genre for format adaptations between 2020 and 2022. “Despite the idea that comedy doesn’t travel well due to its local sensibilities, there has been a big surge in the number of comedy adaptations since 2020,” he said.

French comedy format Call My Agent, for instance, has been adapted five times, with local versions in the UK, Poland, India, South Korea and Turkey. Australian format No Activity, meanwhile, has seen six, with adaptations in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, MENA, Japan and Spain.

In the crime/thriller space, Israeli drama Your Honor has been adapted seven times since 2020, including productions in India, the US, France and Germany; UK drama Liar was adapted six times, including in Spain, Turkey, Greece, Malaysia and Slovakia; while French drama HIP saw four adaptations: Slovakia, Greece, Czech Republic and the US.

Across the genres, scripted format adaptations are on the rise, added the K7 exec. “In 2020, there were 51 scripted format adaptations but by 2022 that figure had risen to 77. The pandemic may have boosted demand for scripted formats since it allows networks and platforms to bypass the lengthy development process.”

The only genre to see a dip, Ciaramella revealed, was telenovelas. “Historically, around 20% of all scripted format adaptations were telenovelas, but last year this figure had dropped to just 7%,” he said.

Nevertheless, Argentinian format Dear Daddies saw five new adaptations between 2020 and 2022.
