All3Media International has sealed a pivotal agreement for Lion Television’s highly anticipated factual series, Pompeii: The New Dig, as PBS joins the venture. Originally commissioned by BBC Two, the project now sees PBS as a co-producer alongside Arte France, securing broadcast rights for the US and Canada.
From the acclaimed creators of Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb and Saving Venice, Pompeii: The New Dig documents the most extensive excavation of Pompeii in decades. This 3-part series, slated for a 2024 broadcast, was initiated by BBC Two in the UK and co-produced with Arte France, in collaboration with All3Media International.
Narrated through visually captivating tales of exploration, featuring a diverse ensemble of archaeologists and specialists, Pompeii: The New Dig promises to unveil a trove of buried enigmas and unresolved puzzles lurking beneath the volcanic debris. With privileged access to ongoing archaeological and forensic inquiries, it sheds light on fresh revelations about identified survivors, tracing their modern-day descendants in Italy through an unprecedented genetic journey into Pompeii's past.
In a remarkable find, archaeologists unearthed a fresco resembling a pizza, dating back 2,000 years, within Pompeii's Regio IX section, near Naples, the birthplace of pizza. Discovered adorning a wall, potentially linked to a bakery's corridor, this artwork adds a tantalizing layer to the city's culinary history.
The series is set to debut on BBC Two in the UK on Monday, April 15th, from 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm BST, and on PBS in the US and Canada on Wednesday, May 15th, from 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm ET (local listings apply), airing on PBS, PBS.org, and the PBS App. Additional episodes are scheduled for May 22nd and 29th
