Jonathan Broughton (Plum Research) presented an insight of the CEE's regions at Natpe Budapest (June 24-27, 2024) unveiling the latest findings on the streaming landscape with his report Eye on CEE.
Regarding the genres, he said that action & adventure and drama have shown significant year-on-year growth in unique viewership across key markets such as Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Lithuania, while documentary and biography & history genres also saw an increase in demand, indicating a growing appetite for educational and factual content.
Despite the global decline of traditional Pay TV, the CEE region displays a stubborn resilience in Pay TV and Telco partnerships, suggesting that SVOD platforms face unique challenges in penetrating this market. Wholesale bundles and strategic partnerships are identified as key growth strategies.
The report underscores the importance of local content in driving viewership. Polish titles, for example, have demonstrated strong performance in both local and international markets. Movies constitute 81% of active titles, though TV series account for 63% of total viewing hours, emphasizing the critical role of original series in engaging audiences.
Among the CEE's countries, Poland stands out as a key market within the CEE region, with distinctive content consumption patterns: there is an high demand for original movies and series that dominate viewing hours, with Polish productions like 365 Days gaining substantial traction globally.
