Nonostante by Valerio Mastandrea (Orizzonti Competition) will premiere on August 28 in Sala Darsena.
September 5 by Tim Fehlbaum (Orizzonti Extra Competition) will debut on August 29 in Sala Giardino.
Valerio Mastandrea, in his second directorial effort following Ride (2018), said: “Opening the Festival means sharing a personal story with the public, hoping it becomes universal.”
The movie is about a man who contentedly lives in a hospital, feeling safe from the outside world. His tranquil existence is disrupted by a new, rebellious patient who challenges the hospital's routines, prompting him to confront his emotions and the reality of his situation.
Starring Dolores Fonzi, Lino Musella, Giorgio Montanini, and Laura Morante, among others, the film is produced by Viola Prestieri and Valeria Golino (HT Film), Francesco Tatò and Oscar Glioti (Damocle), Moreno Zani and Malcom Pagani (Tenderstories) with Rai Cinema. BiM Distribuzione handles Italian distribution, and Tóti Gudnason composed the original score.
September 5, directed by Tim Fehlbaum and starring Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, and Leonie Benesch, will open the Orizzonti Extra competition.
The film is produced by BerghausWöbke Filmproduktion and Projected Picture Works, in collaboration with Constantin Film and ERF Edgar Reitz Filmproduktion. Republic Pictures manages worldwide sales, excluding GSA.
Set during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, the film follows an American sports broadcasting team as they cover the hostage crisis of Israeli athletes. It highlights the ethical challenges of live news coverage under extreme pressure.
