Jin Woo Hwang, President of Something Special, South Korea’s top independent format agency, has unveiled five new formats for MIPCOM 2024. The slate includes a mix of heartfelt, experimental, and comedic series:
Unforgettable Duet: A touching unscripted series where dementia patients, with the help of their families and music, recall long-forgotten memories. The show ends with an emotional duet between the patient and a family member, followed by a tribute from a popular singer. Co-produced with Studio Rudolph, it debuted as the top show on MBN.
Penthouse Game: This experimental reality game show features contestants in financial difficulties competing for control of a luxury penthouse. Participants use gold tokens and strategize within an elevator-centered setting. The show originally aired on Channel A and WAVVE.
Hit-and-Miss Tour: A hilarious travel show where five comedians, friends for 20 years, compete in daily mini-games with the loser footing the bill. Sponsored by various tourism boards, this format is a top-rated show on Channel S.
I Am Single: A hyper-realistic dating show where 12 singles seeking marriage spend six days on "Single’s Land" to find their soulmate. The show, where participants use nicknames instead of real names, is a top-rated dating reality series on ENA and SBS Plus.
Who is She!: A scripted drama based on the hit South Korean film Miss Granny, where a 70-year-old woman magically becomes her 20-year-old self. Produced by Studio V+ and Idea Factory, the series will premiere on KBS2 in December 2024.
Additionally, fan favorite Battle in the Box [in photo], a celebrity game show where teams compete for space in a divided box, will also be highlighted. The format was recently optioned for the U.S. after a successful U.K. debut on U&Dave TV.
Hwang shared, “We’re thrilled to bring such unique formats, including Unforgettable Duet, Penthouse Game, and the scripted drama Who is She! to MIPCOM.”
