At MIPCOM 2024, ICEX Spain Trade & Investment, in collaboration with Parrot Analytics, presented the impressive international success of Spain-originated content, emphasizing its expanding global influence. Parrot Analytics revealed that Spanish content has generated approximately $5.1 billion in global streaming revenue over the past four years. The monumental success of shows like Money Heist and Elite has paved the way for newer productions such as Amazon’s Red Queen, Apple TV+’s co-production Land of Women, and Netflix’s Nowhere, which have all achieved considerable international success. These results solidify Spain’s position as a major player in the global content industry, particularly among European and Spanish-speaking markets.
The data revealed by Parrot Analytics showcased the exponential growth in demand for Spain-originated content from 2023 to 2024 across all major regions. Notably, demand surged in regions like the U.S. and Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. This surge reflects the increasing global appetite for Spanish content and corresponds with a 22% rise in the availability of Spanish series and films on major streaming platforms since 2021. Platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ have invested heavily in Spanish content to cater to this growing demand, further driving its international prominence.
Erik Rovina Mardones, Director for Creative Industries at ICEX, emphasized the importance of the collaboration between ICEX and Parrot Analytics, highlighting that the $5.1 billion in global revenue is a testament to the worldwide appeal and powerful impact of Spain’s productions. He noted that access to data-driven insights enables Spanish creators to tap into emerging global markets and optimize their content for international audiences. This partnership not only showcases Spain’s ability to engage global viewers but also underscores its role as a leading content producer.
Jaime Otero, VP of Partnerships at Parrot Analytics, echoed these sentiments, noting that the growing demand for Spanish content directly translates into higher revenues for major streaming platforms. This, he said, underscores the cultural significance of Spain’s productions while demonstrating their substantial financial impact on the global stage. The economic returns driven by Spain-originated content are undeniable, as they continue to attract viewers from across the world.
The report also highlighted key achievements by top Spanish productions. For instance, Red Queen ranked among the top five new series on Amazon Prime Video in 2024, drawing significant engagement and subscriber renewals. Netflix’s Nowhere emerged as the number one non-English film in 2023, achieving exceptional subscriber acquisition and retention in the first 13 weeks post-release. Other standout titles, such as the Oscar-nominated Society of the Snow and the movie phenomenon My Fault, outperformed global demand averages, further showcasing the international appeal and high performance of Spanish productions.
