The Summer Hikaru Died Anime Adaptation Coming Soon to Netflix
CyberAgent, led by President Susumu Fujita, has unveiled plans for the anime adaptation of Mokumokuren's acclaimed horror manga, The Summer Hikaru Died. The series, animated by CygamesPictures, will be available globally on Netflix.

The hit manga, published by KADOKAWA, follows Yoshiki, a high school boy entangled in eerie events with a mysterious being that imitates his best friend, Hikaru Indou. This coming-of-age horror story explores themes of identity, loss, and madness as strange incidents disrupt their small village.

Renowned director Ryohei Takeshita (Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night) will helm the adaptation, with animation production by CygamesPictures. The story captures the unsettling dynamics between Yoshiki and the entity posing as Hikaru, promising a visually and emotionally gripping experience.

Fans can anticipate a teaser trailer and visual, as well as cast performances by Chiaki Kobayashi (Yoshiki Tsujinaka) and Shuichiro Umeda (Hikaru Indou).

Chiaki Kobayashi said: “The mix of fear and comfort in Yoshiki’s emotions is complex, and I’ll bring every part of myself to portray this journey.”
Shuichiro Umeda shared: “Playing Hikaru feels like peering into a shadowy world. I hope to convey the character’s deep bond with Yoshiki, despite the haunting nature of their relationship.”
Director Ryohei Takeshita highlighted the challenge of animating Mokumokuren’s innovative manga structure while preserving its emotional depth: “We’ve worked hard to bring Yoshiki and Hikaru’s delicate struggles to life.”

The story is set in a peaceful village, Yoshiki and Hikaru’s childhood friendship takes a dark turn after Hikaru mysteriously disappears and returns with a changed presence. As bizarre incidents plague the community, Yoshiki confronts the unsettling truth: “You’re not Hikaru, are you?”

This five-volume manga by Mokumokuren, serialized in Young Ace UP, has captivated readers with its blend of horror and poignant storytelling.

The anime will debut exclusively on Netflix, with additional updates available on its official website and X page.
