Directed by Joe Wright (Darkest Hour, Atonement, Cyrano), the production is brought to life by Sky Studios and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment (a Fremantle company) in co-production with Pathé, in association with Small Forward Productions, and in collaboration with Fremantle and CINECITTÀ S.p.A. Fremantle also handles international distribution. Luca Marinelli, one of Italy’s most acclaimed actors and winner of the David di Donatello, Nastro d’Argento, Coppa Volpi at Venice, and the Shooting Stars Award at Berlin, stars as Mussolini.
Written by Stefano Bises (Gomorrah) and Davide Serino (1992) with input from Scurati, the series charts Mussolini’s rise—from founding the Fascist Movement in 1919 to his infamous 1925 speech after Giacomo Matteotti’s assassination.
The series explores Mussolini’s personal life, including relationships with his wife Rachele and lover Margherita Sarfatti, while portraying Italy’s descent into dictatorship.
Music by Tom Rowlands of The Chemical Brothers—Grammy-winning pioneers of electronic music—adds intensity to the drama.
