The awards are dedicated to championing and promoting diversity and inclusion in all its forms across the international television industry and this year’s winners set a very high bar with exceptional storytelling across a broad range of issues. The ceremony was broadcast online yesterday evening, Tuesday 13 October 2020, and for the first time was open to all delegates via MIPCOM Online+ where it is now available to view until 17 November.
The star-studded awards ceremony, a highlight of the digital MIPCOM Week (Oct. 12-16), was hosted by French singer, DJ, actor and LGBTQ icon Kiddy Smile thanks to a collaboration with Midem and presented in association with founding partner Diversify TV, A+E Networks, FilmRise and Telefilm Canada/Canada Media Fund as presenting partners, all3media international as sponsor of the LGBTQ+ category, and Variety as media partner.
The awards were presented by Dylan Gilmer, American recording artist, actor and star of Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan; Madeleine Madden, actress and proud indigenous Australian; Ravi Patel, actor, filmmaker and entrepreneur; Adam Pearson, actor, presenter and campaigner; Lee Ridley, comedian and writer; Sian Reese Williams, Welsh theatre and television actress and singer, and Jean Yoon, actress, Kim’s Convenience, writer and longtime cultural equity advocate.
This year also featured a special prize, the Variety Creative Change Award, recognising an individual who uses their platform in the arts to create inclusive stories. This new award was presented to creator, showrunner, executive producer, writer and star of HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, Robin Thede.
The winning programmes were chosen by charitable organisations and specialized publications that campaign for equality and inclusion, including Fondation Mozaïk, GADIM, GLAAD, Mencap, Minority Rights Group, OutRight Action International, SCOPE, Show Racism the Red Card, and Stonewall.
Laurine Garaude, Director of the Television Division at Reed MIDEM said: “We had a record number of entries to the awards this year and these winning programmes stood out as exceptional even in a very competitive field.
