Fresh TV and Frapa: buyers are looking for new creativity
Miptv returned in presence, Cannes 4-6 April, after two years with a reduced list of stands and exhibitors but a fully agenda packed with panel and sessions.
Lucy Smith was happy with this edition after the pandemic:” 5000 participants were counted and everybody appreciated the return of in-person meeting and contact’s reconnection”.
The London screening from February 28 to March 4 affected the market as the big International groups such as All3Media, Fremantle, ITV Studios didn’t take any stands in Cannes, having already organized showcase in the centre of London.
As usual, the market was very focused on unscripted programs from the traditional appoint of the Fresh Tv to FRAPA. On Monday, April 4, Virginia Mouseler presented the Fresh TV at the Debussy Theatre. The classic session of formats around premiered since the beginning of 2022: two original programs are Italian, Back to School distributed by Mediaset Distribution, broadcast by Italia 1 sees a group of children helping celebrities to pass the fifth grade exam at elementary school and period dating show Back to Love, an original from Massimo Righini (Casta Diva) sees 8 couples dealing with the rules of the Recency’s time to find true love.

Beside this, The Wit’s traditional Fresh TV Formats announced the born of a new reality genre called D-Acting, which fuses dating shows with more developed contexts. Among the titles in the category she included:
 Dating like Stars (UK/Fremantle), Back to Love (Italy/Casta Diva), The Courtship (US/Banijay), Palace of Love (Poland/TVN Discovery), My Mom, Your Dad (US, ITV Studios), Tunnel of Love (Brasil/Sony), Dating with Dogs (France/Can’t Stop Media), Fitness Flirt: Make me Sweet (The Netherlands/MGM), Open House: The Great Experiment (UK/Passion Distribution), The Big D (US/Warner), Marriage Market (US/Fox), First Dance, Second Chance (US/Small World), My Boyfriend is Better (Korea/CIENM).

Other trend is the guessing show and she highlighted the British show Fame in the Family (UK/Fremantle) and Bullsh*t Detectives (UK/Fremantle).
The cookery trend is still alive with Rat in the Kitchen (US/ITV Studios), Top Take Out (UK/Warner Media), The Next Restaurant (Israel/Fremantle).

A part the show Master Cleaners (Denmark/Heart Land), the reality adventure Freeze the Fear (UK/BBC Studios) and Million Dollar Island (The Netherlands/Talpa Distribution).

Inside the big genre of game shows and quis, the recent BBC format Bridge of Lies, already commissioned for season two, One Question (UK/NBC), Back to School (Italy/Mediaset), The National Poop Test (The Netherlands/BNN Vara).
The executive also listed the four best-selling formats of the season: Masked Singer (MBC, Middle East), I Can See Your Voice (CJ ENM, Korea), Lego Masters (Banijay) and Got Talent (Fremantle

The Frapa Summit was a great occasion to present creative Hwang Jin Woo, president of Something Special (Korea), Jan Salling, BBC Nordics, Joe Mace, ITV (UK),
Nick Smith, All3Media International (UK), Phil Gurin, The Gurin Co. (USA) and Carlotta Rossi Spencer, Banijay (UK). They all talk about the key points of format creation and considered future collaboration to develop new projects.

David Ciaramella, from UK’s K7, resumed its presentation at the FRAPA Formats Summit: ‘What’s new or up? Realities are back in all their forms, but especially traditional dating shows with different approaches, more survival pieces, realities where the contestant gets surprised and unscripted shows coming from scripted stories, like Amazon is doing. All genres can be used as hook: from thrillers to dramas’.

Another panel dedicated to formats was the one focused on Belgium. Gepke Genderlof, BE-TV (Belgium) pointed out his hit shows: ‘Our format of the moment is The Way out, with the ‘Escape room’ idea. Other is The musical of your life, in the line of exploring hot moments of most of the people: a first love, childhood plays, if your work is the correct one, to be fired, etc’. 

Turkish distributor Global Agency launched Gila Kantar new singing talent show: ‘We have unique success with Beat me if you can, because it combines a singing show with game, memory and strategy. Both contestants and juries are playing’. The show was renewed for a second season already.
