LOVE IS IN THE AIR
The strongest trend this season (and also the previous one) in entertainment is the dating shows, with new titles and others that are less new such as To Paris for Love: A Reality 'Rom Com (ROKU, USA), Heartbeat (Caracol TV, Colombia), Bimilnamnyeo (KBS, Korea), Eden (iHO, Korea), Billet Koherlihed (DR1, Denmark) and Túnel du Amor (Multishow, Brazil). "Dating programs are very suitable content for young audiences, the most sought after target by OTTs", affirmed Saló.
As for fiction, "we find hits with a historical setting such as Bridgerton (T3) and the creation of formats that are increasingly aware of the LGTBIQ+ theme continues. Particularly noteworthy is the success of romantic Asian series like Modern Love (Prime Video, India), The Great Weddings of Munnes (Voot Select, India), Ma, Bie Nao Le! (Net, Taiwan); Uncoupled (Netflix, USA); Ah Nerede (Star TV, Turkish); Gutiab (ENA, Korea); Wen Xiang Xie (Sohu, China) and Keshigomu wo Kureta Joshi wo Suki ni Natta(Nippon TV, Japan).
SPORTS AND DIVERSITY
Sports content has proliferated in the audiovisual world with the multiplication of screens specialized in this content. In this way, the type of offer has also been diversified and "we find contests, games, docuseries, factuals, documentaries", indicated Saló. The executive highlighted the reality shows "Andy vs. Wesley: Scoren in de Kelderklasse" (Veronica, Netherlands); "Combate Global Exclusivo"(ViX+, USA), the documentary series "Fearless: The Inside Story of the AFLW" (Disney+, Australia), and biopics, whether based on the lives of well-known athletes or stories created for the screens like "A League on Their Own, Monkeys with Guns" (Prime Video, USA) and (ViS, Brazil).
Since diversity was installed on screens, the appearance of DiversityTV content has opened up all kinds of stories. From "Drag Race France" (French adaptation of the popular format "RuPaul's Drag Race"), to "Trixie Motel", "Queens to the rescue", "Drag Me Out Norge", "Make Up Your Mind", "Ditlev Tamm - professor på høje hæle", the Drag world is present on all platforms with contents that record all kinds of proposals and genres. "In fiction, diversity is reflected in a wide and varied range of protagonists from a prestigious Parisian tailor-drag or a young Welshman of Iranian origin to a trans boy who defies traditions", said Saló. Some of these titles are "Krolowa" (Netflix, Poland), "Queer as Folk" (Peacock, USA), "The Other Half" (Dave, UK) and "El rey de los machos" (Star+, Mexico).
THE CLASSICS NEVER FAIL
The classics have come back hitting hard both in entertainment, with such well-known titles as "Let's Make a Deal" (GTV, Indonesia), "Big Brother"(ITV2, UK), "The Mole" (Canale 5, Italy), "MasterChef: Young Talent" (Denmark and Norway), "The Farm" (Telecinco, Spain) and "The Bachelorette" (Telecinco, Spain), as well as in fiction, with all kinds of prequels, sequels, reboots and Spin Offs like "Star Trek" (Paramount+, USA), "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" (Prime Video, USA), "House of the Dragon" (HBO, USA), "Los Protegidos ADN" (Antena 3, Spain) or "El Zorro" (Prime Video, Spain).
GECA report also mentioned that new technologies that are used in current productions. "The new technologies CGI (Computer Generated Imagery), Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Face Retriever, Voice Cloning, Metaverse... not only advance audiovisual production systems but have also become tools for content narration", affirmed Gloria Saló. "Virtual Reality can be used to design shocking scenarios such as 'Lost In Time' or 'Piggy Bank' and more recently 'The Connection', but also to create 'hybrid formats' in which real people and virtual alter egos are placed in the same space", she explained.
THE REALITY
Saló also observes that true stories continue to be a magnet for viewers. Whether in the format of social experiment, experience and survival or True Crime, the viewer feels involved with this type of content and production companies and platforms keep it in mind when including it in their catalogs and programming schedules. Some examples are: "El caso Cassez-Vallarta: Una novela criminal" (Nétflix, Mexico), "Mr Good: Cop or Crook?" (Netflix, Noruega), "Old People's Home for Teenagers" (ABC, Australia), "Sombra" (RTP1, Portugal) and "Ridley" (ITV1, UK). "Many times it is enough to read that a fiction is based or inspired 'on a true story' to arouse curiosity about what they are going to tell us," she asserted.
On the other hand, the boom in adaptations continues: literary, soap operas, podcasts, comics and all the formats that are provided. "Although we have commented on the return of a large number of classic formats with new versions in different countries, new ideas are also making their way into the international market, demonstrating that the global format business is still more alive than ever," said the director of Production and Content Consulting of GECA. Examples of these adaptations are: "Sres Papis" (Telefe, Argentina), "Apagón" (Movistar+, Spain), "Cell 8" (Viaplay, Sweden) and "The Sandman" (Netflix, USA).
Finally, the new audiovisual content is no stranger to the international conflicts we are experiencing. Audiovisual content, aside from informational content, has never been immune to international conflicts. Thus, "we find factuals with stories of immigrants and refugees that reflect how society reacts to the needs of other human beings of origin and belief different from their own", said Saló. Some of these title are: "Flugten fra Ukraine" (DR1, Denmark), "De Gevluchte Gast" (NPO2, Netherlands), "The Great Muslim American Road Trip" (PBS, USA), "Nonkels" (Streamz, Belgioum), "Mo" (Netflix, USA), Bangla (Rai Tre, Italy) and "Ms Marvel" (Disney+, USA).
