London-based production and distribution company Videoplugger has just acquired global distribution rights (excluding Europe) to 2021 Croatian drama series The Last Socialist Artefact (original title: Podrucje Bez Signala).
Produced by Croatian company Kinorama, the 6x52’ drama series revolves around Oleg and Nikola, two masters of survival from Zagreb who are brought to a remote town in the Balkans when a mysterious client places an order for a specific type of turbine. To deliver the turbine, which is no longer manufactured, they renovate the long-abandoned factory in a town sunk into despair. When the town takes on a new life, and the citizens regain their dignity and hope by working in the factory, the buyer disappears. After a series of unsuccessful attempts to find a new buyer, will Nikola and his new friends manage to sell the turbine as “the last socialist artefact” to a famous art gallery?
Rene Bitorajac, Krešimir Mikić, Jovana Stojiljković, Izudin Bajrović, Goran Bogdan, and Tihana Lazović round up the cast. The Last Socialist Artefact is based on the novel No-Signal Area by Robert Perišić, and was directed by Dalibor Matanić (Fine Dead Girls), who also created the series along with Ankica Jurić Tilić.
From its launch in 2021, The Last Socialist Artefact has won the 2021 Best Series Award for the International Panorama category at Lille’s Series Mania, while in August 2022 it was awarded as Best Drama Series at the 28th Hearts of Sarajevo TV Awards.
