Urban music in all its forms (rap, hip-hop...) has not only radically changed the global music landscape, but has also taken a significant place in television. Generally speaking, the programmes that focus on this musical world belong to the talent show genre, but with a docu/factual rather than competition slant, which makes the storytelling freer and less 'harnessed' by format rules and mechanisms.

The Netflix series Rhythm + Flow (2019), localised in different countries (such as the Brazilian Nova Cena, the Italian Nuova Scena, and others), was something of a forerunner of this subgenre, which has since been joined by many more recent shows.

Now The Reality Mixtape Vol.1 will be broadcast on the Spanish public channel RTVE's La 2 and Play at the beginning of June, produced by Beta Entertainment Spain. Due to the explicit lyrics typical of this type of music, the programme is recommended for people over the age of 12 (rather unusual for an unscripted programme, especially on a public network). This is somewhat paradoxical, given that this music (and this kind of programme) is aimed precisely at a young and very young audience...
The series proposes to follow the entire process of creating an urban music song, from its composition to its release, all over a period of one week. In each episode, an Ibero-American artist travels to Madrid and locks himself up in a home studio where, together with a team of producers, they create an original song that is premiered worldwide during the programme and simultaneously on the artist's Spotify and social media accounts.
The artists will also talk about their inspirations and challenges, trying to connect with the naturalness of their everyday lives in the studio, revealing the deeper, more genuine aspects that have made them successful.
