Exploring the Phenomenal Success of the 1% Club with André Renaud from BBC Studios
On Tuesday, June 25 during the panel Formatting Success Taking The Floor and 1% Club Across Europe, M.Chiara Duranti (Formatbiz) had an illuminating conversation with André Renaud, SVP Global Formats at BBC Studios and Sebastian van Barneveld, Director Global Distribution at Talpa Studios and Sasha Tkachenko, General Producer at Novy TV.
The two parts sections delves into the outstanding success of the hit quiz format, The 1% Club and The Floor.

The first one, 1% Club was adapted in 12 countries, while The Floor reached 15 countries so far.
Both formats features a hundred participants in a dynamic arena setting, that offer flexibility in different versions with cross-media applications.

The 1 % Club starts participants with £1,000 each, risking their stake with each question. Incorrect answers lead to elimination, contributing the lost amounts to a collective pot which the remaining contestants vie for. This simple yet thrilling mechanic has proven engaging, with participants and viewers alike drawn to the strategic and inclusive gameplay. The show's appeal is further amplified by its host in the UK, the charismatic Lee Mack, whose humor enriches the viewing experience.

Renaud proudly highlights the show's international appeal, noting recent expansions into Hungary and Ukraine: "with adaptations now spanning 12 territories - said Renaud - 1% Club demonstrates a remarkable adaptability and relevance across different cultures and languages".
The conversation also touched on the strategic integration of digital platforms to enhance viewer interaction. Following a successful first season in the UK, a play-along app was developed, leading to impressive engagement figures including 2.4 million downloads. This digital extension allows viewers to actively participate from home, increasing both engagement and commercial opportunities.

Looking forward, Renaud discusses plans to further diversify the show's reach, including adaptations in major markets like the USA and Mexico. Each version is carefully crafted to resonate with local audiences, often involving popular hosts relevant to the demographic, such as the Mexican version featuring a comedian known for his wrestler persona.

As the interview concludes, Renaud emphasizes the 1% Club's potential as a prime-time staple that bridges generational gaps, a rare quality that has contributed to its high ratings and enthusiastic reception. The discussion at the MCD interview not only sheds light on the operational mechanics of this innovative format but also forecasts a bright future for its continued success across the globe.
