Award-winning filmmaker Tina Gharavi (I Am Nasrine, African Queens: Cleopatra) is set to make her showrunner debut with The Fox, a six-part Scandi Noir drama co-produced with Icelandic company Polarama. The series is based on Sólveig Pálsdóttir’s acclaimed thriller Refurinn, part of her Ice & Crime series featuring detective Guðgeir Fransson.
Blending Nordic Noir with themes of refugees, loneliness, and belonging, The Fox follows Guðgeir, a suspended Reykjavik detective, and Greer, a retired British Chief Superintendent, as they investigate the disappearance of a Sri Lankan woman in a remote Icelandic town. Set against the backdrop of an opiate crisis and Iceland’s haunting landscapes, the series introduces a new British anti-hero inspired by figures like Germaine Greer and Cracker’s Fitz.
Gharavi, founder of Bridge + Tunnel Productions, acquired the rights to Pálsdóttir’s novel and collaborated closely with the author to develop the series. “The Fox’s themes resonate deeply with me,” Gharavi said, adding, “When the right projects didn’t come along, I decided to create my own.”
Polarama’s Kidda Rokkfou praised the project, calling it “quirky, pacey, and populated with captivating characters in a stunning Icelandic setting.” The team is actively exploring partnerships across Europe and Scandinavia.
Gharavi is also directing the romantic comedy Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day, featuring a star-studded cast including Haley Bennett, Timothy Spall, and Jennifer Saunders.
