All3Media International has partnered with Astro, Malaysia’s leading content provider, to produce a Mandarin adaptation of the hit comedy-drama Step Dave. Originally created by South Pacific Pictures for TV2 in New Zealand, the series follows a carefree 24-year-old bartender whose life takes a dramatic turn when he falls for a sophisticated 39-year-old mother of three—an unexpected romance that challenges conventions.
Astro’s ten-part series, set to premiere later this year, marks the sixth adaptation of Step Dave and is produced in collaboration with phoSumpro, an award-winning Malaysian production company with two decades of industry experience.
This deal strengthens the growing partnership between All3Media International and Astro, following the success of their previous adaptation of Liar. It also adds to All3Media’s expanding slate of scripted format successes in Asia, where over 15 adaptations have been commissioned. Notable hits include Kafas, the Malaysian version of Dark Money, which won ‘Best Scripted Format’ at C21’s 2024 International Format Awards and ‘Best TV Format Adaptation (Scripted)’ at the 2024 ContentAsia Awards. Additionally, Miss S, a Chinese adaptation of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, has aired across 29 territories, including the US via HBO.
Amanda Pe, Sales Manager at All3Media International, stated:"Astro has been a fantastic partner, and after the success of Liar, we are excited to bring Step Dave to Malaysian audiences. With Astro’s commitment to top-tier storytelling and phoSumpro’s expertise in local adaptations, we believe this romantic comedy will resonate strongly."
Agnes Rozario, Director of Content at Astro, added:"This collaboration reflects our dedication to delivering rich, engaging stories with high production values and top-tier Malaysian talent. Step Dave’s fresh take on love and societal norms makes it an ideal addition to our lineup."
