K7 Media reveal most successful scripted format genres in a report titled Tracking the giant an exclusive research about the tv scripted formats around the world.
The scripted formats market has grown by over 75% since the 1990s. K7 Media’s latest report, ‘Tracking the Scripted Giants’, details the top 100 travelling scripted TV formats and provides insight into how changing tastes and growing demand is impacting the market.
K7 Media has worked directly with distributors to identify the trends driving scripted remakes and adaptations the market; the genres that have endured; those in decline and shows that have generated interest since first launching.
Discussing the report, K7 Media’s CEO & Founder, Keri Lewis Brown, said: “There are numerous factors that can impact the success of scripted formats, including the high cost of production, cultural difference and viewers’ changing tastes.”
The last nine years have seen the continued growth of the crime genre, with a quarter of all travelling formats now defined as crime. This has been driven in part by the sudden popularity of Scandi/Nordic Noir adaptations and the success of shows including The Bridge, Penoza and Black Widow.
Often overlapping with crime, thrillers are also becoming more in demand with shows such as Revenge and Eyewitness gripping viewers. This trend is clear when exploring the language associated with the top selling scripted formats over the last decade. K7 Media has noted key phrases including missing children/person, investigation and thriller feature most regularly.
Lewis Brown added: “As traditional linear channels try and encourage loyal series viewing, high concept thrillers and crime dramas have a track record of keeping viewers on the edge of their seats and tuning in week after week.”
Other emerging genres centre on more specific profession-based genres, for example medical, legal or political dramas.
