Amazon is making a new series based on the popular post-apocalyptic role-playing game Fallout from Bethesda.
There are no details on the project, which is still in the development stages, except that it’ll be an Amazon Prime Original produced by Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy as part of their big overall deal with the company. Nolan and Joy will exec produce the series via their Kilter Films in association with game publishers Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks.
Making its debut in 1997, Fallout take place in relentlessly bleak settings where scattered bands of humans fend off zombies, various mutated animals, and other monstrosities. The games are also known for their dark humor; all Fallout games mock the excessive consumerism and American social norms that contributed to the apocalypse, while ludicrous side quests and characters provide a comic offset to the otherwise gritty atmosphere. The franchise has posted record sales and received dozens of Game of the Year awards, while its mobile game, Fallout Shelter, has been downloaded more than 170 million times.
“Fallout is an iconic global franchise, with legions of fans worldwide and a rich, deeply compelling storyline that powers it. And Jonah and Lisa are the perfect storytellers to bring this series to life,” said Albert Cheng, COO and Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios.
The Fallout TV news is the latest in a string of announcements about acclaimed video games being adapted into films or television shows. Showtime has also spent years developing its Halo TV series, HBO is prepping a take on The Last of US and Netflix has already found success with its take on The Witcher.
