The Rise of FAST: Maria Rua Aguete Highlights Data-Driven Growth in Latin America's Media Industry
During Content Americas in Miami (January 20–23, 2025), Maria Rua Aguete, Head of Media & Entertainment at Omdia, shared key insights into the transformative growth of Latin America’s media landscape, particularly the booming sector of free ad-supported streaming television (FAST).

Latin America’s media and entertainment market is projected to grow by 9.4% in 2025, reaching $55 billion—outpacing both the global growth rate of 6% and the US growth rate of 3.3%. Streaming video alone is expected to account for nearly half of these revenues, surging to $24 billion by the end of the year. However, Rua Aguete underscored the rapid emergence of FAST as a significant monetization opportunity for both local content owners and international format sellers.

According to Omdia’s research, FAST revenues in Latin America are forecast to grow from $231 million in 2024 to an impressive $569 million by 2029. Key markets driving this growth include:

Brazil: Expected to reach $303 million by 2029, making it the third-largest FAST market globally, after the US and the UK.
Mexico: Projected to grow from $75 million in 2024 to $163 million in 2029.
Spain: Though outside Latin America, Spain's revenues will rise significantly, from $25 million in 2024 to $61 million by 2029.
Opportunities for Local and Global Players
“The rise of FAST in Latin America signals a wealth of opportunities for the media and entertainment industry,” Rua Aguete emphasized during the session. “This growth will not only benefit local players but also pave the way for international collaborations and new monetization models.”

The rise of FAST provides a dual opportunity: it empowers local rights holders to monetize their content more effectively while creating new avenues for international format sellers to enter these burgeoning markets.

As Latin America continues its rapid digital transformation, the media and entertainment sector stands poised for unparalleled growth. With FAST revenues climbing and streaming video at the forefront, the region is becoming a global leader in innovative, ad-supported streaming solutions.

This session at Content Americas reaffirmed Latin America’s position as a key growth engine for the global media landscape, offering a glimpse into the future of entertainment in one of the world’s most dynamic regions.
