Two Words with Casta Diva and Small World about the launch of The Magic Door on Rai 2

Two Words with Casta Diva and Small World about the launch of The Magic Door on Rai 2
At Mipcom (Cannes, October 20-24, 2024), we sat down with Massimo Righini, Chief Creative Officer (CCO), and Fabio Nesi, CEO of Casta Diva, to discuss their latest television venture, The Magic Door. The new daily show, hosted by Andrea de Logu, is making waves on Rai 2 by providing viewers with inspirational transformations in life, style, career, and perspective. Produced by Casta Diva and distributed globally by Small World, the show created by US producer JD Roth, encourages viewers to step through “the magic door” toward self-improvement.

Formatbiz: Massimo, The Magic Door has a unique premise. Can you tell us more about what viewers can expect?
Massimo Righini: "I've always been passionate about formats that tell stories. The Magic Door has a strong focus and purpose. Each person who walks through this door is seeking change, whether it’s for themselves, a friend, or a family member. They feel a need for a push to alter something in their lives. Through the guidance of our dedicated coaches, we help facilitate this transformation. Every day, we tell four stories, helping people change their appearance, careers if they’re unsatisfied, and even teaching them new skills like dancing, cooking, or learning foreign languages to keep up with the times. We also provide coaching on handling relationships with pets, a nod to holistic life improvement.”

Formatbiz: How has the international collaboration shaped this format?
Massimo Righini: "We worked extensively with Tim Crescenti and JD to adapt this format, which Small World distributes globally. There’s a strong appetite, both in Italy and beyond, for uplifting, positive stories from everyday people who can set a meaningful example for viewers at home. We’re thrilled that Lea Rai recognized the program’s potential right away. The show airs on Rai 2, and while we’re pleased with the current ratings, we aim to continue building a loyal viewer base that connects with the show over time."

Formatbiz: Fabio, as CEO, what does this show mean for Casta Diva's broader goals?
Fabio Nesi: "Casta Diva has always had an international vision. This format was tailored for the Italian audience, but we’re excited that our version is also being distributed worldwide. While it may seem very Italian on the surface, it has a universal appeal. At Casta Diva, we’re focused on developing original intellectual properties to bring to the international market. This show is just one example of our commitment to creating content that resonates globally.”

Formatbiz: How was MIPCOM this year?
Tim Crescenti: absolutely superb! For the first time in my 27 years plus in our groovy global business, we had two new shows premeiring in Europe the same two weeks! Win Your Country in Spain and La Porta Magica in Italy.

Formatbiz: What kind of response did The Magic Door receive from the audience in Cannes?
Tim Crescenti: Magical! Haha. Truly, buyers were excited to see a new original format launched amidst our current challenging climate. Moreover, the theme of positivity of “what do you want to change in your life?” connected so well.

Formatbiz: Can you describe the main features and appeal of The Magic Door format?
Tim Crescenti: As my business partner Colleen states for viewers to experience “months into minutes” of life-changing results is fulfilling and exctiting.

Formatbiz: In your experience, what are the most sought-after formats in the current market?
Tim Crescenti: Aspirational type formats. Formats like Traitors with a bit of clever twist.

Formatbiz: Are there any noticeable trends in the industry right now, or is the market oversaturated with content?
Formatbiz: As everyone knows, budgets, commissions are being cut, buyers are looking for more cost-practical formats.
