Canadian Viewers Lead Global Appetite for True Crime on Netflix, Says Digital i
Canadian Netflix subscribers watched more true crime content than any other country in 2024, according to new research by analytics firm Digital i, revealed last week by media consultant Beatrice Rossmanith at Series Mania Forum.

60.7% of Canadian Netflix users watched at least 20 minutes of a true crime title last year, topping a global ranking of 20 measured territories. Australia followed with 56.5%, and Colombia came in third at 54.5%. At the bottom of the chart was Japan, where only 11.2% of subscribers engaged with the genre.

Among the most-watched true crime titles: Baby Reindeer (UK scripted) led the pack, reaching 70 million Netflix accounts, Monsters (US scripted anthology) followed with 61 million, American Nightmare (non-scripted) reached 53 million accounts.

Digital i also reported that interest in non-scripted true crime has grown sharply: in 2020, six of the top 20 Netflix documentary titles were true crime; by 2024, that number had more than doubled to 15.

A noted dip in 2023 was attributed to reduced content output caused by the Hollywood writers' strike, as highlighted in Digital i’s ‘True Crime By Engagement’ chart.Digital i currently measures Netflix viewership across 20 countries, including the U.S., Canada, Brazil, UK, France, Germany, South Korea, and Japan.
